Kyambogo University is a public university established in 2003. It is a merger of the following institutions:

  • Institute of Education Kyambogo (ITEK)
  • Kyambogo Polytechnic
  • Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE)

The university is located 8kms from Kampala city Centre along the Kampala-Jinja highway.

The Department of Sociology and Social Administration is under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Initially part of Department of Economics, the Department of Sociology and Social Administration became autonomous in 2009 with Mr. Robert Tweheyo (M.A SSPM) as the first Acting Head of Department

Before 2010, the Department offered two academic programmes namely; Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS) and Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration (BSWSA).The two programmes are attractive to both students and parents/guardians. Students under these programmes totalling about 2,500 constitute a big percentage of the total University student population.

Another programme, Bachelor of Demography and Reproductive Health was introduced2010. The first batch of students of this programme graduatedin December, 2013. This programme continues to gain momentum, having registered more than 200students in last sixyears. Local and central governmenthave shown keen interest in graduates of this program.

These programmes are taught by highly qualified lecturers. In addition, all students in the programmes undertakepracticum training as a way of imparting hands on skills and translating theory into practice. Furthermore, students in the final year of study majoring in Sociology, and students ofSocial Work and Demography and Reproductive Health are required to write dissertations.
