The Department of Economics & Statistics has a total teaching staff strength of 81 members; this includes 2 PhD- level trained and 61 Masters-level trained staff of which 15 are full time staff. We also have 18 first class graduates from Kyambogo University who are now our tutorial assistants. It is imperative to note that our staff are young, dynamic and professional.

History

The Department of Economics & Statistics started way back in 2001 as Economics Department before it was transformed into Economics and Statistics in 2004. It falls under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and currently home to close to a half the total number of students in the Faculty. The department has stand-alone programs but also services wider faculty programs where students offer economics courses. The restructuring of Kyambogo University conducted by K2 Informatics Consultants (2004) recommended among other things a split of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences into two separate Faculties or Schools.

The need to split the Faculty is gradually gaining momentum and the Department of Economics and Statistics has submitted a proposal on the same. The advice has always been that numbers of full time staff needed to grow up to at least 15 which have now been achieved. Restructuring workshop has already been held through an adhoc committee headed by Dr. Matovu John Baptist and the Committee among others recommended that Economics and Statistics should to be split and this is going to be done in a phased manner.

Currently the Department of Economics and Statistics offers three undergraduate degree and a diploma programs; Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Bachelor of Economics and Statistics, Bachelor of Microfinance and Diploma in Microfinance. With the impending split, the Department guarantees improvement in efficiency, effectiveness and systematic planned growth in Economics, Microfinance and Statistics disciplines.
