INTRODUCTION

Resource centre40

Welcome to the Early Childhood Development Section. This is the section that treasures holistic child development to lay a better foundation for the future. Early Childhood Development (ECD) was started at Kyambogo University (by then ITEK) in 1982 as a diploma programmeby the National Institute of Education. Later, in 1987, a degree programmein Early Childhood Education was introduced after being transferred from Makerere University. As a way of providing hands on training, the Child study Centre (Nursery School) was opened in 1995. Later, in 1998, the Certificate in Nursery Teaching (CNT) was also initiated to cater for the untrained teachers who were already working in various nursery schools. With increased demand for ECD services in the country, other programmes have also now been developed to help prepare teachers and early childhood development caregivers at different levels.

Currently, the section spearheads development of different early childhoodprogrammes for children and families, ECD teacher training for different ECD institutions, ECD tutor training to support different ECD teacher training institutions, ECD policy innovations and development, and research into different ECD related areas for the purpose of informing and leading the nation in matters related to ECD.
