PhysicsDepartment is among the oldest departments that exist in Kyambogo University. It acquired its present status in 1993 upon approval of the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK) statute. It was formally established to teach Bachelor of education (BED),Bachelor of science with Education(Physics)degree programmes of Makerere University up to 2003 when it was incorporated into the newly established Kyambogo University which was as a result of the merger of the three former institutions of Institute of Teacher Education-Kyambogo (ITEK), Uganda Polytechnic-Kyambogo (UPK) and Uganda National Institute of Special Needs Education(UNISE) that it started teaching degree programmes of Kyambogo University. Currently, it offers several programmes namely ;

PHD in physics

Masters of Science with Education

Bachelor of Science with Education

Bachelor of Science Technology Physics

Bachelor of Education

Diploma in Science Technology Physics

Aims and Objectives of the Department

The primary aims of the department are:

  • Equip learners with adequate skills and content so as to improve their teaching at secondary schools in general and particularly at O and A level.
  • Assist learners acquire appropriate methods and techniques of teaching the subject at all levels.
  • Help learners examine and appreciate national and international issues.
  • Improve learners’ skills in rational and logical discussion of ideas.
  • Develop interest in science related researches and the use of a variety of scientific equipment and materials.
  • Make learners develop the desire for continuous self-development through self-motivated learning.

Target Group

The Programme targets O level certificate holders, A level certificate holders and Mature Age entrants.

Key out-put of the department

The product of Masters in Science in Physics has great opportunities of employment. These include telecommunication, Energy, Environment and many other related fields.

The students of the bachelors of science with technology have several opportunities in several field engineering including Electrical mechanical telecommunication etc

The students of bachelors of science with education have a wide range of opportunities which include teaching in several institutions of higher learning and, teaching in ordinary and advanced levels of education.

The diploma students have many areas of employment which include research institutions as technician, instrumentation engineers etc

Research and publications

The department has many researches taking place and has made some publications in the area of radiation physics e.g., Radioactive materials in fish and other foods such as yams in the shores of lake Victoria.
